The city of Jakarta can be vibrant, energetic, and even beautiful from certain perspectives. It’s one of the most densely populated places on earth with 2 million more inhabitants than London while only being ⅓ of the size. And due to various climate issues and the excessive pumping of groundwater, Jakarta is also sinking into the sea at an alarming rate. It’s a real reminder that with photography we have the ability to capture and preserve the memory of locations that may not be around forever.

Jakarta is difficult to photograph unless you know the city well. Thankfully Ari Amphibia knows two of the best vantage points to capture the cityscape. One is at the top of the Mandarin Hotel and the other requires navigating a labyrinth of paths adjacent to Jakarta’s largest water treatment plant, making for a very interesting and aromatic experience.

[Disclaimer: filmed in December 2019, pre-COVID]

We see a little bit of Jakarta’s darker and more controversial side when we visit one of Indonesia’s largest wet markets, notoriously known for the smuggling of wild and rare bird species. Guided by Fujifilm X-Photographer Gathot Subroto, we take a trip around this market through the eyes of an accomplished street photographer. This particular market houses thousands of different species of wildlife from all over the world. Birds from China, North America, SE Asia, Turkey, Africa, and virtually everywhere else are all cramped up together and stacked like cereal boxes alongside bats, civets, monkeys, and snakes. At the time of filming in December 2019, Covid-19 and the Coronavirus weren’t even in the news yet and nobody knew that it would be a major global pandemic. The scary part is that Covid-19 is said to have originated in a wet market just like this and from the exact same animals we interacted with here.

On a lighter note, we visited Dutchtown to get to know more of the colonial history of Jakarta. The land now known as Jakarta used to be Dutch East Indies capital, Batavia when it was colonized for 320 years. At Fatahillah square, we see the historical remnants while riding a neon-colored bike with a nice hat to match.

We end our stay in Jakarta with an exclusive shoot at the best vantage point in the city. After a lengthy security procedure, we gain access to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel which overlooks one of Jakarta’s iconic landmarks, the Selamat Datang monument, surrounded by a massive roundabout. Photographically, this begs the question, how do you capture light trails from cars that are stuck still in a perpetual traffic jam?!
