In this video we discuss what are lines of cleavage and their importance, what are stretch marks and what causes stretch marks and what is cellulite and what causes cellulite?

Transcript/notes

Lines of cleavage, which are also called tension lines, represent the predominate orientation of parallel bundles of collagen and elastic fibers in the dermal layer of the skin. The alignments of these fibers are different at different locations on the body. These lines of cleavage are important in procedures that require surgical cuts or incisions to be made to the skin.

Incisions made perpendicular to a cleavage line often results in slower healing and increased scarring. Whereas incisions made parallel to a cleavage line can result in less damage to the skin allowing healing to be more rapid and leaving much less scarring. However, sometimes it is unavoidable for a surgeon to make an incision perpendicular to the lines of cleavage.
Now let’s look at stretch marks.

So, what are stretch marks? Well, if the fibers in dermal layer of the skin are stretched too much, they may tear resulting in a stretch mark on the skin. This often occurs in rapid growth during pregnancy and in puberty, and can happen to some bodybuilders and to obese persons.

These appear as silver-white scar lines and mostly occur in the butt, hips, armpits and lower abdominal area. Stretch marks do not pose a health risk or impair proper body functions and there are no 100% proven methods or procedures to remove stretch marks.

Now let’s look at cellulite.
So, what is cellulite? Orange peel skin, cottage cheese skin.
Cellulite appears as the skin looks like it has lumps or dimples in it. It occurs when fat deposits push into the dermal connective tissue layer of the skin creating the lumpy or dimpled looking skin. It appears more in females than males and it is estimated that 80 to 90% of females will experience cellulite and it typically occurs in the buttocks area or in the back of the upper thighs.

The exact cause of cellulite is unknown, however there are several factors that may contribute to it, such as hormones, poor blood flow to the affected area, age, genetic factors, consuming a poor diet and not exercising. Like stretch marks, cellulite does not pose a health risk or impair proper body functions and there are no 100% proven methods or procedures to completely remove cellulite.

However there are certain cosmetic procedures that can improve the appearance of the area over a short period of time. Regular exercise, especially resistance training can build muscle and improve circulation, which can’t cure cellulite but can reduce its appearance. Consuming a nutrient rich diet and not over consuming food can also be beneficial.
