James Thornton, Martin Goodman and Madhur Anand in conversation with Mridula Rames. With climate change rapidly escalating, a panel seeks to answer the urgent questions around how far we have gone and how much time we have left, if at all. The latest report by The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that the changes the world has seen, be it wildfires or rising sea levels, has been unprecedented. Martin Goodman has co-authored Client Earth with his husband James Thornton, who helms a pioneering organization of the same name that seeks to represent the Earth and advocate for its interests. Every bit as radical the name suggests, Client Earth continues to be a necessary intervention in times of rampant ecological devastation. Madhur Anand is the author of the book of poems titled A New Index for Predicting Catastrophes. She is the Professor of ecology and sustainability at the University of Guelph, and was appointed the inaugural director of the Guelph Institute for Environmental Research. Her recent book is This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart. A session that evaluates cutting edge technology, nature based solutions, environmental enforcement litigation and our responsibility to the planet in conversation with author and founder of Sundaram Climate Institute, Mridula Ramesh. James Thornton is a world authority on the power of the law to create lasting change. Having dedicated his life to fighting for environmental justice, he launched ClientEarth in 2007, sparking fundamental change in the way environmental protections are made and enforced across Europe. Now operating globally, ClientEarth uses advocacy, litigation and research to address the greatest challenges of our time. Martin Goodman has published 11 books, both nonfiction and fiction. Award-winning nonfiction includes his biography of the pioneering scientist J.S.Haldane and ClientEarth, the story of eco-lawyers battling to save the planet. He is emeritus professor of creative writing at the University of Hull, and the founding publisher of Barbican Press. Madhur Anand is the author of the book of poems, A New Index for Predicting Catastrophes, and the experimental memoir, This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart, both considered trailblazing in their synthesis of art and science. A New Index was a finalist for the Trillium Book Award for Poetry. This Red Line won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction. Her second collection of poems is entitled Parasitic Oscillations. She is a professor of ecology and sustainability at the University of Guelph, and was appointed the inaugural director of the Guelph Institute for Environmental Research. Mridula Ramesh is the author of critically acclaimed The Climate Solution: India’s Climate Change Crisis and What We Can Do About It, and the founder of the Sundaram Climate Institute, which focuses on waste and water management. She is an active angel investor in cleantech start-ups, with a portfolio of over 15 start-ups. Ramesh sits on several angel investment groups and is involved in initiatives to spur entrepreneurship to build climate resilience. A graduate with distinction from Cornell University (with majors in Chemistry and Microbiology), with an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, she worked at McKinsey in Silicon Valley before returning to India. She teaches a class on climate change at the Great Lakes Institute of Management and is a regular columnist for Firstpost and has written for The Hindu, Live Mint, Bloomberg Quint, and Conde Nast. She is the Executive Director of Sundaram Textiles and lives and experiments in Madurai in a net zero-waste house with her husband and two children. She is part of the Advisory Committee, UNDP India National Circular Economy Project, part of the Board of Trustees of World Wildlife Fund, India, and the Chairperson of the Board of Governors, of NIT, Andhra Pradesh.
