The Liverpool & Manchester Railway was the world's first inter-city mainline railway. As such it was home of many "firsts", inculding the first railway strike in February 1836. Caused by the penny-pinching attitude of the Board of Directors in cutting the pay and benefits of its staff, whilst increasing their working hours, enough was enough and the L&M drivers went on strike. It's worth mentioning, that in the days of "one driver, one engine" with drivers not being allowed to drive the engine of another man, that the footplate crews were working 16 hours or more a day. The longest recorded working day on the L&M was 20 hours! And there were no mandatory rest periods as they are today. https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Locom...
