The Jurong Rail Line was constructed during the 1960s when the Singapore government decided that the Jurong area would be the location of the second port of Singapore. As a new industrial estate, it was realized that most of Jurong lacked adequate roads and related infrastructure (since the area was largely undeveloped at that time and was considered a rural district). Thus an agreement was reached between Singapore and Malaysia to extend a railway line from the Bukit Timah railway station to the main KTM-operated railway line between Malaysia and the Tanjong Pagar railway station near the Singapore city district to the newly built industrial estate and Jurong Port.
As our nation grew in terms of infrastructure, more roads were built and accessibility to Jurong became easier. The freight-based railway services on the "Jurong Line" were finally terminated in 1992, with the Jurong railway station itself being demolished in 1993.
What's left right now are the truss bridge over the Ulu Pandan canal, the steel tunnel at Clementi Road, old rusty tracks (in parts), and the thick vegetation surrounded by the forest - truly an exciting playground for the die-hard adventurer to bash through!
