At
9:37 is an appearance from United's legendary scout Joe Armstrong, he was the one that pursued Bobby and secured his signing for United. Born in Manchester in 1894, Joe had been scouting for Manchester City when he befriended the young Matt Busby who was a young City player. This friendship lead to Busby recruiting Joe, alongside Jimmy Murphy, when he first started at United in 1945. Joe was a general "fixer" and scout, finding and signing Roger Byrne, the first "Busby Babe" and many others over the years. If you'd telephoned the club in the 1950s, chances are it would have been Joe that answered the phone as well! The death of the previous chief scout Louis Rocca in 1950, lead to Joe eventually getting the title "Chief Scout", though unbelievably he was still only part-time at United until 1954 when he retired, aged 60, from his day job as GPO engineer in Manchester.
