13TH TIME LUCKY! ? This video represents one frustrating month of my life, the first time this hobby felt like work and the first time since radio that a dream project was quashed. I have an interesting (?) story of that, one for the book I guess, about a tribute to a recently-deceased former football legend, who until his illness (prostate cancer, same thing that took Dad) had been a part of the football commentary team, an amazing, inspiring man till the end, a very sad death. The tribute took about 2 weeks to write and re-write and write again. It was bloody good, if I do say so myself. The format was simple- a bit of voice-over (the station's news director) about the man's life, from his birth and youth including local football in the western suburbs of depression-era Melbourne, with a soundscape of crows and horse-and-cart etc. I can picture engineer Cody Cody doing a beautiful job (appropriately). More voice-over, describing the legend's league beginnings and his quick rise to acclaim including All-Australian, club captain, being part of the team's (suburb he was born and raised in) first league championship (Grand Final). More actuality. V/O: His death and legacy, carried on by his son. I dropped it off to Production, edit points noted. I had worked with the producer (aka engineer) for a while. The script was as easy to follow as a toddler's jigsaw. It sat and sat. I'd ask what was up (it was supposed to be a Rawards entry, deadline quickly approaching). Producer would say. "Sorry mate, so busy." He had recorded "grabs". Some. "Well, can you show ME how to do it?", I asked. "I'll put it together weekends". "Oh no, you could NEVER learn THIS. I had to do a COURSE! It would take ages and I don't have the time". It's something I've chuckled about often, as I've made 400 or whatever videos. Easiest bloody thing in the world. And I'm doing VIDEO too. It would've taken him an hour to show me while he ate his lunch, but that would mean another person had the skills. He was the sole producer, with a "cart kid" (dogsbody) supposedly learning. But if you ain't sure of your ability or scared of that creative dude, it's best to keep "The Knowledge" to oneself. Not that I wanted HIS gig. I was Creative Director AND breakfast co-host. Mind you, if they could have found a way for me to do all they would've. Maybe a bed under the edit bay, ala George Costanza (Seinfeld!) I should add, this was a commercial radio monopoly (kind-of a one-firm duopoly, very rare, it's not WHAT you know) both stations owned by the one family, all staff working for both, even announcers (ads), though "personalities" stuck to their stations (literally), in a ridiculous attempt to pretend both stations were separate. I think just I was on both stations on more than ads (newsreaders weren't the same), doing characters on one, movie reviews on t'other. Because I was a wuss too scared to ask for a raise, I earned $35k a year when I left in '01 (24.3k US), still measly at $56k ($38k). Half of what my brekky bro & sis were on (they didn't tell me and didn't know I knew). THAT grew a chip on my shoulder! Not racism, simply a statement of fact: Scots. And now, back to our tribute. When the guy finally "produced" the tribute at the last possible moment (constant grief for me the whole time from the Program Director though MY work was finished months earlier), he simply took the one big slab of (a very bland) voice-over and slapped the interviews and footy actuality at the end! Whack an intro on, a quick tag ("nick of paint" - deep cut) and Bob's your uncle! He was, actually. I was pissed off. I always seem to be pissed off, don't I? Just like with this video! First BabyFaceBren "meltdown". Thanks to Patreon, I stayed. Anyway, the award. I didn't want to send the thing in. But we did. And it won. Which amazed me. It was either a really shit year, or my writing was that good, because the other stuff (and I'm not being a bitch) wasn't good. I don't believe he even cut the interviews. Maybe. Couldn't say. I don't think I listened to more than 5 minutes, when it was clear I was hearing ALL my script in one lump. I went through many attempts to upload Al, the YouTube copyright rob'ts giving me much grief, changing which songs were OK each time. No. 12 was the charm. It was my greatest edit yet, most time-consuming and my proudest achievement (until 'Crowd Work', which I doubt I'll top, I still got a few good years). Al wasn't up for long, about 500 views, 3 days now, about a week then. It attracted some nice comments, one I remember being "This feels so REAL!" Then it was taken down, thanks to a manual complaint. That meant a human being was involved (much nastier than a rob't). Al's "suits"! Or Al himself? I hope NOT. BIG FAN! It WAS allowed on my OTHER channel. THAT was weird. Been there 10 months (40 views!). I just took it down. Not allowed here? Then it's just for me. (unless someone downloads it, I 'spose).
