How can one ethically become a “wounded healer”? Laurie discusses her own wounds - surviving childhood with mentally ill parents, the murder of her sisters in a shooting, and how her divorce catalyzed her healing journey. This intentional journey of recovery has enabled her to become a present and effective healer. Laurie Works grew up in a cult-like family structure, kept in place by a delusional father. She witnessed a shooting in a church parking lot that killed her twin sister, Stephanie, and younger sister, Rachel. Laurie has married and then divorced and rebuilt a life in the aftermath, made up of courage, vulnerability, and presence. She is studying to become a clinical mental health counsellor. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
