President Barack Obama named Jan T. Vilcek, MD, PhD, a recipient of the prestigious National Medal of Technology and Innovation in an announcement released by the White House on December 21, 2012.
Dr. Jan Vilcek is a Professor of Microbiology at New York University School of Medicine and President and Co-founder of the Vilcek Foundation. He was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), where he received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. In 1964 he and his wife, Marica Vilcek, an art historian, defected from what was then communist Czechoslovakia. Upon immigrating to the United States in 1965, Dr. Vilcek joined the faculty of NYU School of Medicine.
In 2010, Dr. Vilcek was awarded the Slovakia Goodwill Ambassador Award in Bratislava by the Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miroslav Lajcak. The distinguished award is presented to Slovaks who have made significant contributions to society while living abroad.
