All too often we hear about problematic authors, problematic books, problematic scenes, problematic characters, but we rarely hear about problematic readers. This is a short video about reading interpretation and the reader's part in it.
Reading experiences are valid, but they are not definitive, nor do they excuse us of our responsibility in how we have interpreted a text.
It can be be a bit of a blow to our ego when we realise that we are the ones that have made the mistake and it is all too easy to blame the 'author' for not making things clearer. However, I can assure you it is very liberating to become comfortable with the idea that we as reader are fallible and that we can make mistakes. It opens up a lot of texts to us that previously were 'bad' to now becoming 'we misunderstood'. We may not enjoy the texts, but we can maybe appreciate them a bit more.
