STORYLINE
(M) Millions of Hindu devotees have been bathing in the holy Ganges River in India, to cleanse them of their sins, at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela or Grand Pitcher Festival, in the holy city of Allahabad.
It is said to be one of the world's largest religious gatherings that lasts nearly two months.
Hindu worshippers believe that the ritual of bathing at the confluence of three rivers - holy Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati - can wash away their sins and free them from the cycle of death and rebirth.
The congregation brings together (m) millions of naked ascetics, Nirvana seekers and admirers of Indian spiritual exotica.
For many however, the biggest draw are those holy men who attract the crowds with their unusual feats or ways of meditation - all for the cause of world peace and prosperity.
Ash-smeared, cannabis-smoking Sadhu Amar Bharati is a regular at the Kumbh Mela.
He claims to have kept his hand raised for more than 30 years in devotion to Hindu deity Shiva.
Bharati says his now deformed hand has lost all sensation already and remains stuck in its current position.
There is also the naked Kailash Giri baba, who has taken a vow to stand on one leg for 12 years.
Resting his arms on a makeshift swing for support, he blesses his followers.
He says this is his way for performing penance to get rid of all that ails of the human world.
"We are sages and we are offering prayers. That's why I have taken a vow to stay in this position for twelve years," he says.
Perhaps the most visited at the Kumbh Mela are the camps of Naga Sadhus, the naked holy men revered for their austerity and feared for their temper.
They belong to the Juna Akhara or religious sect, an ancient mystical order of Hindu Yogis and Sadhus.
Holy men belonging to this sect are considered to be one of the most powerful in the Hindu religious hierarchy.
Smoking pot, the intoxicating swirls of which are believed to induce a state of spiritual Nirvana, Naga sadhu Dandi Bharati says the Kumbh festival allows the holy men to offer collective prayers for the good of humanity.
"This is the tradition of Naga Sadhus. Our sect is a religious organisation which works for rebuilding the society," said Dandi Bharati.
For many worshippers, singing and dancing in devotion is the preferred way to seek divine blessing.
