Ganga started his education in the village (shuruati education gaon se hui, he says). Teachers from the village encouraged him to take Science and Mathematics (as happens when you score very well at the school exams). Ganga is from Barmer in Rajasthan and he studied B.Sc. (Jai Narayan Vyas University, Jodhpur) and went to JNU for M.A. in Hindi literature. During his education years, Ganga used to read interviews of selected candidates to gauge the candidate’s background and to find out whether people like him could be successful at the IAS exam. In his family there was nobody in the Civil Services but there were many in various government services. STUDYING FOR THE IAS EXAM Ganga loved solving Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and was confident about clearing the UPSC Civil Services (Prelims or PT) exam and his Mains exam focus was relatively less. Since his school days, he used to study question papers of NDA and other exams (and later appeared in Rajasthan government and SSC exams) due to which his MCQ-exam strength was ready for use in the UPSC Prelims part of the civil services (IAS) exam. ANSWER WRITING PRACTICE FOR UPSC CIVIL SERVICES GS MAINS EXAM In the first attempt, he couldn’t practice enough answer writing and he couldn’t attempt all the questions in the Mains exam hall. He recalls how his UPSC Mains exam centre was Jaipur and his friends used to ask him about his performance in the examination (only 16-17 at most were attempted in the whole paper and not the twenty full questions in the GS paper). He was not selected in the first attempt because he had not practiced enough answer writing for the UPSC CS exam. Ganga gives advice to UPSC civil services aspirants: if you practice answer writing for the Mains examination after the Prelims exam then you have a good chance of clearing the CS mains exam and your selection is almost assured. If you write well in the Mains General Studies (GS) papers, then you could score average marks (say 100 marks in each paper) and then you get okay marks in the optional paper too (say 270 marks in the optional according to current trend of the year) and you may get average marks in the interview too and more or less your selection is assured. HOW TO WRITE BETTER ANSWERS IN EXAM HALL In his second attempt it was answer writing skills that he honed for the civil services exam (including getting his answers of optional and other papers checked by others; Ganga liked studying in a group, he says). There is not much problem of content in the Mains exam; after Prelims you are at a level where you can write enough in the exam hall if you have rigorously practiced answer writing before the exam (and could manage time in the exam hall; time management is very important for UPSC exams). Maps, diagram, flowcharts, pie chart, graphics and other innovative ideas help your answers by enhancing the impact (which will catch the eyes of the examiner). HINDI MEDIUM STUDENTS CAN SCORE GOOD AT THE IAS EXAM Ganga says his marks in the first attempt were beyond expectations and he had missed the interview call by 15-16 marks only. Ganga realized that with such limited preparation he could get such good marks in Hindi medium, it meant that it was possible to score well in the UPSC IAS exam despite Hindi medium (before seeing his marks he was of the view that he may have failed the compulsory English paper!). Ganga says that innovative answer writing could give you an edge of about 100 marks at the IAS mains exam and it will help you shoot top ranks at the civil services exam (say rank 1 to 50 or 100 at the IAS exam). HOW TO STUDY AND PREPARE: GANGA ANSWERS STUDENTS QUERIES ON THE IAS EXAM He answers many student queries in the open seminar which is contained in the video here. Questions such as ‘strategy for Mains after the Prelims examination and how do you cover the big UPSC Civils syllabus in a small time’; what is the synopsis of his interview and how should a candidate for the UPSC interview board; making notes for whatever is studied; daily, weekly, creative schedules for studies; and so on. About the UPSC Personality test (interview after IAS mains) Ganga says that mock interviews before the exam may frighten you but the actual interview is easy and nice in a relaxed atmosphere. He says the board members are not there to reject you (but to select you).
