December 27, 1980 Pasadena, California. The 4th Occasional Doo Dah Parade Conceived in 1978 by several friends sitting in a bar called Loch Ness Monster Pub in Pasadena, as an irreverent alternative to the traditional formality of the Rose Parade, which is also held in Pasadena. In 1978, January 1 fell on
a Sunday, and the Rose Parade, which typically takes place on January 1, will not march on a Sunday. So the friends decided it would be fun to have an alternate parade on January 1 that year. Some of the early participants were
Some of the early participants included Snotty Scotty and the Hankies, the Lawn Mower Drill Team, Macho Dog, the Briefcase Drill Team and General Hershy Bar, among many others. It was the first Pasadena Doo Dah Parade.
The throwing of tortillas into and from the crowds was a signature event during the parade. It became known as the twisted sister of the conventional Rose Parade, the Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade began as a grassroots event and
gained national attention over the years for its eccentric and, often, irreverent satire. It has spawned numerous off-beat replicants across the country was even highlighted in the Wall Street Journal. It was also named by Readers
Digest as “America’s Best Parade,” and was featured in the book 50 Places You Must Visit Before You Die.
Interesting to note is unlike the Rose Bowl Parade, there is not a contingent of white suited parade monitors or the hundreds of police that filled Pasadena every year. The Doodah parade pretty much policed itself. A good time was had by all.
The Quality of this video is marginal at best. It was recorded on one of the first Panasonic Portable VHS recorders and camera. There are some spots where the tape is bad. I had to edit out all the video noise from when ever I pressed pause on the camera. I have no memory of this day or how I got a spot up front and in a prime viewing spot.
