Bringing out a history of caste based atrocities in the country from Kilvenmani, Villupuram, Tsundur, Dharmapuri, Bathani Tola and Laxmanpur Bathe, poet, novelist and activist Meena Kandasamy claimed that violence against Dalits in India is not an exception, but the norm. Drawing from multiple examples in the past, she drew a picture of the connection between Brahminism and the role of the armed forces – especially the Army, in the massacres of Dalits. She showed how Dalit assertion all across history has been brutally supressed, often by the criminalization of the community and the view to ‘teaching them a lesson’. Even the alleged leveller – Capitalism, ended up consolidating caste in India.

When it comes to maintaining their hegemony, the upper castes have played ‘hide and seek’ – hide the fact and seek to distort.

Sunil Shanbag preceded the talk by a brief depiction of his sister’s life. A translation and a Q&A followed the talks.

Meena Kandasamy was speaking as part of the 7th Anuradha Gandhy Memorial Lecture on the 30th of October, 2015 at the Marathi Patrakar Sangh, Azad Maidan, Mumbai.

The Lecture was organised by The Anuradha Ghandy Memorial Committee. To Donate:
