Title:Crystal Caves - ADG Episode 275

The caves are made of everything BUT crystal... I want my money back! D:

This game wasn't actually in the cards for this week, let alone this year, but with an HD remake debuting soon, Gemini decided now was a good time to try it out, thus today on Ancient DOS Games we're looking at Crystal Caves, a platformer developed and released by Apogee in 1991 which helped set many of the standards Apogee platformers would be known for following.

While the game itself isn't bad, it's pretty rough around the edges with some needless frustrations added to the mix. To that end, this video is less a review of the good/bad aspects of the game and more of a showcase and listing of what those little annoyances are and what minor changes would help eliminate them for the upcoming HD version.

Suffice to say, this is one of the few ADG videos where it would be really appreciated if one of the original or current devs took a look!. ;)

Additional Information and Corrections:

* For the digital downloads, here's a link to the game on the 3D Realms website: https://3drealms.com/catalog/crystal-...

* Here's a link to the game on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/35...

* And lastly, here's a link to grab the game from GOG. Normally, it's $1 more expensive here, but I also have a GOG affiliate tag and games on GOG do go on sale routinely! https://www.gog.com/game/crystal_cave...

* So there's a couple things I forgot to comment on since I was so focussed on the things I wanted to see updated in the HD version. The first is that every episode has at least one dark level where it's difficult to see everything at first. There's always a switch somewhere within the first couple moments of the level though which you can hit to turn the lights on so it's not that big a deal.

* Secondly, I'd almost swear the ice-breaking sound effect was pulled straight from the DOS version of Mega Man... but they're PC Speaker sound effects from two entirely different developers so I'm not even sure how you'd accomplish that...? :o

* I didn't actually look into any of the details of the HD remake prior to making this video, as I wanted to go in completely blind, but it turns out the HD remake already incorporates at least some of the suggestions I point out here! Also, it turns out there IS a visual cue for collecting all the crystals, but since it relies on the border space normally absent from playing the game with emulators it was easy to miss! :P
