Mr. Jan -Jaap Sonke is a Malawian of Dutch descent. He designed and built the house that looks like a football in Chirimba. He is an architect, a mechanical engineer and a politician. He was a Member of Parliament in Malawi for Blantyre Kabula constituency from 1999 until 2004. He was also a Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning between June 1999 and May 2004 and Minister of Public Works as well. He fell out of grace with Dr. Bakili Muluzi because of his opposition to the president's bid to change the constitution which would have allowed him a third term.
He designed the Blantyre Synod Multi-Purpose Hall between in 1992 and the Malawi Government Regional Office in Blantyre in 1996. The Mbayani Maternity and Clinic is his brain child since he convinced the European Union and Foundation Kabula in The Netherlands to come to the rescue of Mbayani people by constructing the health centre.
He continues to stay in Chirimba - Blantyre and is involved in several construction works in the country.
