Essential question: How do I explain AI to grades K-2 and grades 3-5? Artificial intelligence are two abstract words. Can young children learn these abstract words? Research suggests that “ up to the age of nine, children learn more abstract words that have emotional associations, especially positive associations (e.g., hope) than words without such associations (e.g., plain), which are learnt later (Vigliocco, G., Norbury, C., & M. If children are excited about what Alexa or Siri can do, it is natural for them to be curious about what makes Alexa do what she does. Given the opportunity to use the words “Artificial intelligence” and children may understand that AI is related to a device, learn about the “Internet of Things,” and be motivated by the present and future possibilities of AI in making the world better through computational action. How can we educators help young children to understand and explore more about AI? Participants in this session will learn 5 big ideas in AI and how very young students can be exposed to them through the use of appropriate mental and physical activities across disciplines that make AI a seamless part of school life just as AI is a seamless part of recreation, business and industry. Attendees will have time to play with AI resources found online and learn of AI robots and other tools designed for classrooms.
