Dr. Ben Steere, of the University of West Georgia’s Anthropology Department, presents "The First Southerners: Creeks and Cherokees in Early Georgia." This program, held on April 1, 2015, at UWG’s Ingram Library drew an audience of over two hundred and was sponsored by Ingram Library’s Penelope Melson Society. In this program, Dr. Steere talks about the Muscogee Creek and Cherokee who are famously known as two of the “five civilized tribes” of the early nineteenth-century Southeastern United States. He discusses their shared social and cultural and social institutions that date back several thousand years and how they used different strategies to adapt to the biological, political, economic, and social changes of the colonial period. In the end, he notes that the Creek and Cherokee still have a vibrant culture and are thus far from being “Vanishing Indians.”
