Opening Remarks were given by the Mayor of Rotterdam, Mr. Ahmed Aboutaleb. The mayor is very active in Holocaust remembrance in Rotterdam. He calls for the preservation of history and keeping the memory alive.
Dienke Hondius presented her work in progress from her Mapping Hiding Places project. Ideas for this presentation include a map of the hiding places in Invisible Years; 350 degree film footage inside hiding places in Zeist, that can be put on a map; film clip about two children hiding in Amersfoort; and a comparison between hiding in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Kiene Brillenburg Wurth focused on the Reformed Protestant Church as a space of safety and precarity for Jews in hiding during the Nazi reign. Her talk takes stock of a newly found sermon that her grandfather, Reverend Brillenburg Wurth, delivered the day after liberation (with the Jewish families who were hidden in the Breeplein Church at the gathering).
