MacArthur professor of physics, the associate director at the Research Laboratory of Electronics, and the director of the MIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms. His experimental research in atomic physics and laser spectroscopy made him one of the first scientists to observe the Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute atomic gases phenomenon. His awards include the Gustav-Hertz Prize of the German Physical Society, the Discover Magazine Award for Technological Innovation, and the Nobel prize in physics.
